Friends of Community Opportunities

Join the Friends of Community Opportunities!

Board member Martin Daniel and Andrew Bickley supported Community Opportunities at the
2007 Spring Dinner.

At present, Community Opportunities depends upon the generosity of friends, small grants from public agencies and private foundations, and hours and hours of volunteer time to stay afloat.  But to grow into a truly viable alternative for people who experience disabilities, we must, for now, rely on small and large contributions from people just like you.

The "Life Like Yours" Campaign

In the Spring of 2007, we started the "Life Like Yours" Campaign.

What kind of life can Virginia's citizens with disabilities have?

  • They can have ordinary, everyday lives, just like yours.
  • They can work and pay taxes.
  • They can live with people they choose to live with.
  • They can go to ball games and movies with their friends.
  • They can volunteer and make their communities stronger.

They can have
a life like yours.

Community Opportunities' single-minded mission is to help citizens with disabilities become valued, contributing members of society.

All of us need strong social supports and economic resources to build a good life.  Community Opportunities staff help people with disabilities develop the social and economic supports they need to be productive, self-determined and safe.

Our services are free.  We depend on grants and the support of our community to do the work.

We hope at least 300 contributors will sign on to the Life Like Yours Campaign by pledging to give at least $100 each year.

Won't you join us?

Additionally, Community Opportunities received funding through the Virginia Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services for a Community Inclusion Project. Funded for a two-year period, the project focused on supporting people who are institutionalized or in danger of institutionalization, helping each to develop a network of friends in the community. The project helped each network incorporate as a microboard and explore ways microboards can assisted decision-making support. Community Opportunities partnered with Central Virginia Training Center, New River Valley Community Services and Wall Residences for the project.
